Using the proper construction
aggregates is vital to the long
term performance of your
project. Clay site soils are
unstable in that they expand
with moisture, and contract
when they dry out. This will
cause patios to heave or settle,
and retaining walls to tilt
forward or settle. Replacing the
soil for the base level pad of a
retaining wall or patio with Class
5 road gravel will correct or
prevent settlement issues. The
use of a soil stabilization fabric
in conjunction with the proper
aggregates is also an
inexpensive way to prevent
problems. The drainage area
behind retaining walls should
include a 12" zone of 3/4" clear
crushed stone back into the
bank.
